Moving to Australia from NZ

Your visa
Most New Zealand citizens can live and work in Australia. On arrival with a New Zealand passport, many get a Special Category visa. The rules can change and depend on your situation, so always check the Australian Department of Home Affairs website before you go.
Your KiwiSaver
If you move to Australia permanently, you can usually transfer your whole KiwiSaver balance to an Australian super fund. You cannot transfer only part of it, and not every Australian fund accepts KiwiSaver transfers, so check with your fund first. You need an Australian Tax File Number.
Shipping your furniture
Your goods go by sea in a shipping container, either a full container or a shared one for smaller moves. International movers pack, ship and deliver door to door. Get quotes from a few and ask about transit insurance and how long the shipping takes.
Biosecurity: what to check
Australia has strict biosecurity rules. Before you pack:
- Clean soil and plant material off shoes, garden tools, bikes and outdoor furniture.
- Do not pack food, plants or seeds without checking the rules.
- Keep a list of what is in each box: you may need to declare items.
- Check the Australian Department of Agriculture website for the current rules.
